Discovering the Delightful History of Palmer House Ice Cream

Chocolate, Strawberry, Palmer House, Pistachio, and Orange Sherbet were sliced (not scooped) into one smile-sparking cone. After 90 years, the Sapp family is still serving the same ice cream Joseph developed back in 1926. And they’ll continue selling that delicious ice cream for years to come. It took some trial and error for Joseph to get the flavor combination just right. His first Rainbow Cones were sold out of a small ice cream shack on 92nd. In the early days, Chicago only extended south as far as the Bridgeport area, so Joseph and Katherine couldn’t rely on major Chicago traffic for their burgeoning ice cream stand.

Biting into Awan’s Indonesian-inspired, plant-based ice cream feels like biting into the smoothest, creamiest cloud on a sultry summer day. The name holds true — awan translates to “cloud” in Indonesian — with its gelato-like texture and heavenly taste.

The Signature Flavor

While there are many recipes available online for making homemade Palmer House ice cream, the true taste experience of this iconic treat is best enjoyed at the Palmer House hotel itself. However, adventurous home cooks can certainly try their hand at recreating this unique flavor in their own kitchens. The combination of cherry, vanilla, and chocolate flavors was unlike anything that had been tasted before, and it quickly became a signature dish of the hotel. Today, Palmer House ice cream continues to be a popular menu item at the hotel, as well as at ice cream shops and restaurants across the country. It’s the prettiest pink ice cream I’ve ever seen, and it’s definitely the best version of “cherry nut” that I’ve ever tasted. You can serve Palmer House ice cream in tall parfait glasses for an elegant presentation, or you can create a build-your-own sundae bar for a fun and interactive dessert experience. Remember the lovable scene in It’s a Wonderful Life where a young George Bailey talks up his future love at the old-school ice cream parlor? That may have well been shot at Fosselman’s Ice Cream Co., a classic ice cream shop based in Alhambra that’s been in business for over 100 years. Fosselman’s is a relic of the past while simultaneously evolving and reflecting the present, with a dedication to creating delicious flavors that represent the diverse neighborhood they’re proudly a part of. Flavors like Oaxacan chocolate, horchata, dulce de leche, taro, ube and red bean have been perfected and added to the menu at the request of their Latino and Asian customers. The third-generation-owned company has a dedication to using only the finest, locally sourced ingredients and you can taste it in every scoop. The ice cream parlor’s motto, “life’s too short for just one flavor,” is prominently placed on a wall inside the Lombard location.

I remember getting a rainbow cone at the Minnesota State Fair every summer ever since I was a little kid. It’s such a pretty treat with all of those amazing colors, but my favorite part of this ice cream is a flavor called Palmer House. Palmer House ice cream was originally created for The Palmer House Hotel in Chicago.
